Today was our last day of school. Woo! Hoo! I say "our" because I kind of feel like it was my last day of school too. I am very much ready for a break from the endless driving, dragging kids out of bed in the morning, piano practice nagging, boxed lunch making, class party planning, test anxiety calming, car line waiting, and everything else in betweening school days.
Now it's time for lazy summer days! No, we won't lay around in our pajamas all day (well, at least not every day). We'll stay semi-scheduled because that's how we roll, but it will be so nice to get up in the morning and say, "What should we do today?". I'm having my kids come up with a summer bucket list. We'll be in California in July, but some of the things they're coming up with can be done while we're away from home. So far their list includes: go canoeing, swim in Barton Springs pool, go on a hike, go to Big Top Candy Shop, go swimming, tie-dye t-shirts, go camping (that's mine), and go to California (that one is Kaylee's). But, before I continue on about summer, it's time to catch up on a few things from the last month or so.
Arbor Day Tree Planting
Yep, we planted trees again this year. It's become a family tradition. Sadly, this was our last year planting trees with Elizabeth and Caleb, although Elizabeth did suggest the possibility of coming back to Texas for the tree planting next year. Our neighbors were there again too, so we planted trees with them as well.
Making Cinnamon Rolls
When Kaylee was helping me make cinnamon rolls, she wanted me to take a picture of her kneading the cinnamon roll dough. She did a fantastic job. She produced perfectly kneaded dough with absolutely no help.
Fried Oreos
I went on a field trip to a rodeo with Landon's class a while back. While we were there his teacher purchased deep fried Oreos. She insisted that all the moms try one. They were so good. Good enough that I went home and searched for a recipe. We produced some very delicious fried Oreos. Yummy!
National Jr. Honor Society
Ainsley was invited to join the National Jr. Honor Society at her school next year. After filling out an application to join NJHS, she attended an induction ceremony in May.
Zucchini!
Our garden has produced a plethora of zucchini so far this season; so much that we've been giving away a bunch of it. In Texas we have a pesky little moth called a Squash Vine Borer that kills vine plants quite effectively by laying its nasty little eggs on the plant. Once the eggs hatch, the disgusting little Borers dig their way into the vine and kill the whole plant. I've tried to be proactive this year by going outside regularly to pick the eggs off my plants, but once again the Vine Borer has won. All six of my plants are in the process of dying, but I'll keep them in the ground until they completely stop producing zucchini.
Renaissance Fair
The 5th through 12th graders at my kid's school worked on a Renaissance project through the month of May. Each grade level created something different. Ainsley's grade worked on building model castles and tri-fold board presentations. The end result was a Renaissance Fair at their school. Ainsley enjoyed the fair and looked super cute dressed up as an archer. The bow that her friend is holding in the picture is actually Ainsley's bow. Her teachers gave her permission to bring it without the arrows.
That's about it. Now that I'm all caught up, let the summer fun begin!
