It all began on an April afternoon. I was outside with Alice the Bunny letting her romp around the backyard when she suddenly started acting bizarre. She was sitting on the lawn thumping her back feet. I thought maybe she had sensed danger, so I decided to bring her back into the house. When I went to get her she suddenly took off racing around the yard, crashing into things, and acting like a total weirdo. I could tell she wanted to get inside, so I opened the back door and on her next loop around the yard she ran into the house and under the couch. That was strange. but I just chalked it up to her being, well . . . Alice. I left her under the couch and headed out for a swim.
On my way home from swimming I got a call from Chris saying he'd pulled Alice out from under the couch and she looked injured. She was limping and not putting weight on one of her front paws. Feeling kind of bad for thinking she was just a weirdo, I called the vet, booked an emergency visit and Chris took her to get checked out. After an emergency fee, x-rays, a bandaged paw, some terribly expensive medicine, and an order to keep Alice caged with as limited movement as possible, he headed home with a bunny that had two dislocated digits. For the next three weeks we (mostly me) took care of an invalid bunny. She needed extra attention since she was confined to her cage, medicine at certain times, and lots of love. She had to go in for a bandage check halfway through her recovery which resulted in a bandage change. She came home with a neon green cast.
After three weeks, we brought her back to the vet and Alice was given a clean bill of health. She was using her paw again and it looked healed (we opted out of another x-ray because they are REALLY expensive). Over the next couple of days, she got used to putting weight on it and after another week or so she was finally free to run around the house. Alice is back to her wild ways and is once again enjoying the outdoors.
