A Little of this and a Little of That

As always, May was a busy month. There were recitals, math tournaments, choir concerts, testing, gymnastics, end of year projects and a variety of other things. And then, school was finally out for the summer! I don't even want to think about how much of summer has already passed. Instead, here are a few pictures from the last few months.

Landon and Kaylee both participated in Math Pentathlon again this year. I coached Landon's team this time around. Landon took home a bronze medal and Kaylee took home gold.

Landon earned his Bear at the end of April and was able to start working on his Webelo and Arrow of Light at Cub Scout Day Camp in June. He was the only one from our ward in the Arrow of Light group, so they put him with another pack. I was a little nervous about him not knowing anyone, but I should have known he would be fine. He's very good at making friends. He came home with a couple of ant bites after the first day of camp and had to deal with an extremely swollen ankle the rest of the week, but he still had a great time. By the end of the week he was good friends with the nurse. He spent quite a bit of time icing his poor ankle and enjoying the huge fan that was set up in front of the nurse's station, haha.

The girls performed in a very entertaining choir show (and I somehow became the choir's booster club secretary) in May. "The Beatles" was their theme, and the three choirs that participated sang songs from various Beatles albums. Kaylee had fun choreographing the dance for the song Love Me Do, and Ainsley is Gateway's 2016-2017 Camerata Choir (high school) president!

Landon has continued with gymnastics and still loves it. His biggest problem right now is choosing the class he wants to take in the fall. He loves the all boys class, but he's also interested in their Ninja Warrior class and their tumbling class. I think he'd take all three if we let him!

One of our first summer projects was to create a summer boredom buster list. After browsing the internet we came up with lots of fun ideas. One of them being . . . gummy Legos! We decided the little Lego guys tasted better than the Legos. The big Legos were a bit too much gummy at one time. Next we're going to try making chocolate Legos.

Landon has become a much better swimmer this summer and is being more cooperative about me teaching him how to swim than he was in summers past. We recently discovered a swimming hole and have been there several times. Since we can't dive in any of the pools around here, I've been teaching him how to dive at the swimming hole. Last time we were there he swam all the way across the river (probably about 30 yards). He loves his video games and has gotten into learning how to program, but once I get that boy outside he absolutely loves the great outdoors.

Kaylee has been thoroughly enjoying her time away from school. She has been quite the homebody lately but did enjoy a week at the summer camp she has attended the last two years. We found her a great violin teacher, and she's enjoying learning how to play the violin. We recently took her in for allergy testing. She was allergic to every last thing they tested. No wonder the poor girl is tired so much. She and I have started allergy shots together, and she has finally conquered her fear of needles. She still doesn't like it, but it doesn't send her into a panic anymore. She is starting to get ready for girls camp and is really looking forward to going next week.

Ainsley attended EFY in June and loved it. It was quite a different experience than last year, but she enjoyed it just the same. She finally finished her class work towards earning her driver license. I don't think I could have picked a more monotonous course for her. I will not be purchasing the same program for Landon or Kaylee. Poor Ainsley. Always the guinea pig. She loves driving and will volunteer to go anywhere if she gets to be the driver. She's pretty good at it, and I am finally able to sit on the passenger side and not have a panic attack - most of the time. She has a huge homework assignment over the summer for AP World History and has been busily trying to complete it. I was hoping she would be able to finish it in June, but it was just too much work. Boo to summer homework!

This is a great time of year. I don't really enjoy the heat, and I don't enjoy the never ending battle over TV and video game time, but I do enjoy having the kids home. They have been really good at helping around the house with minimal complaining lately, and we've developed a nice groove - get the chores done quickly so we can have time to play later. I am going to try to cherish each summer day and try not to think about how fast it is passing. Hurray for summer!
