At the end of April Kaylee was having a harder time than usual with our sheltering in place. I asked her what we could do to help boost her morale. She decided she wanted us to all dress of like Vines (kind of like meme videos) for a Vine themed dinner. We dressed up, ate dinner, and watched Vines that night. We had so much fun with this idea that we decided to think up a new theme each week and have themed Friday night dinners.
Our second dinner was Avengers themed. We made chicken Shawarma wrapped in homemade flat bread. It was so good that the recipe has been added to our famous recipe binder. That night we watched Black Panther. Kaylee was Scarlet Witch, I was drunk Thor, Chris was Ant-man (he's sitting in Landon's hand in the first picture, and Landon was Captain American't (his own made up character).
Next up was Hobbit/Lord of the Rings. We had beef stew (with "Po-tay-toes! Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew) and homemade french bread. Keebler Elf cookies and Swedish Fish were dessert, and we watched The Return of the King that night. Kaylee was Rosie, I was the Eye of Sauron, Landon was Samwise hiding under his Elven cloak, and Chris was the old guy getting ready for the Battle of Helm's Deep.
Our fourth dinner was Psych (a TV show we watch) night. We grilled hamburgers and made cheese fries. Blueberry cobbler was dessert, and of course we watched Psych. Kaylee was Roller Derby Juliet (Talk Derby to Me, Season 3, Episode 7), I was Carol (In Plain Fright, Season 5 Episode 11), Landon was Young Shawn Spencer, and Chris was Henry Spencer (Last Night Gus, Season 6 Episode 2).
Next up was Nintendo Night. We made pizzas that looked like Pokeballs for dinner. Chris made a Thwomp cake and we all played Mario Cart that night. Landon was thrilled I was willing to play. It was pretty fun even though I'm no good. Kaylee was Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Chris was a Korok from Zelda, I was Rosalina from Mario, and Landon was the Ring Fit Adventure Guy.
Chris' birthday fell on a Friday, so that Friday we had a shark party and our theme was party people. We ate donuts for breakfast (because it was also National Donut Day), homemade wontons for dinner, and a yellow cake with chocolate frosting and Neapolitan ice cream for dessert.
Our seventh dinner was Harry Potter themed. We ate shepherd's pie for dinner and had a Honeydukes candy bar for dessert. The fourth Harry Potter was our movie pick for the night because I had just finished the fourth book (I am re-reading the series right now). Kaylee dressed up as Professor Trelawney, Chris was James Potter, I was Moaning Myrtle, and Landon was Harry Potter whilst living with the Dursley's.
After Harry Potter night came Star Wars night. We dressed up as Baby Yoda, Darth Vader, a droid, and the Millennium Falcon. Dinner was a little bit harder (we couldn't find very many ideas) so we ended up making X-Wing pigs in a blanket with tater tots and watermelon. I also ate a salad because I eat my vegetables. Dessert was Andy's Frozen Custard because we were also celebrating Kaylee and Landon getting all P's on their report cards at the end of the year. Yep, P's. Since everyone ended up online schooling the last 9 weeks of school all the schools changed their grading systems to pass/fail. Our activity for the evening was watching Star Wars Episode VII.
Our 10th dinner was America themed because of the 4th of July. We started the festivities on Friday with the musical Hamilton, which was soooo good, and extended the fun into Saturday since Saturday was actually the 4th. We dressed up in our red, white, and blue, ate hamburgers for dinner with corn on the cob, chips and dip, carrot sticks, watermelon, and homemade ice cream for dessert. I also found some inexpensive red, white, and blue decor that I put up around the house. Our entertainment was Jaws the board game, Mario Kart, and a few episodes of The Simpsons.
And that folks was our first ten themed dinners spanning from the end of April to the beginning of July. We plan on continuing this new tradition because between the creative costumes and new recipes we've tried, it's been a blast!
